What Is Sum Wah?
An Introduction to the Name
Brother Mazwi
───────
Say the words aloud: Sum Wah. They feel ancient and familiar, as though you have always known them. They feel solid enough to touch.
SUMis the whole: total, complete, everything.
WAHis the way: a process, a practice, a path to be walked.
It also carries the echo of the Japanese wa, meaning harmony.
The name holds two meanings, and each completes the other.
Sum Wah is the complete way.
A path walked through the Five Gates, lived rather than believed.
Sum Wah is complete harmony.
Harmony with yourself, with others, and with life itself.
Harmony is a way we keep walking. We lose it, we notice, and we return. That awareness and return is the practice.
This is conscious living. This is living in harmony.

The Light of Sum Wah

Introduction
— ✦ —
Sum Wah is a path of liberation, and this teaching names what that liberation is: knowing that you are the Light. Everything else in the teaching describes the road from seeking the Light outside yourself to recognizing it within.
At the heart of Sum Wah is a reversal of how most of us pursue what we value. Civilization teaches us to reach, acquire, and hold. We treat even the sacred as something to consume, to make part of ourselves by possessing it. Sum Wah teaches that this grasping is exactly what cuts us off. What we clutch, we lose. What we release, we are free to experience.
So the student of Sum Wah is not asked to capture the Light, win its friendship, or bargain for its closeness. The Light needs nothing from us; it is connection itself. The work is ours: to let go of the need for illumination, to stop chasing, and to let the Light be free. In that freedom, we find it has been lighting our path all along.
This teaching sits within the wider Sum Wah framework, practiced through the Five Gates of Breath, Focus, Accountability, Wisdom, and Temperament. Read it slowly. It is meant to be experienced more than analyzed.
The Teaching on the Light
— ✦ —
The Light does not walk among you. The Light does not make friends with you. The Light is above you. You aspire to be near the Light. Yet the Light has no need, no desire for connection. The Light is connection.
The Light guides the way along the path, the path illuminated by the Light's own journey. The Light is above you.
The people of civilization aspire, and conspire, to consume the Light, so that it becomes a part of them. But in their consumption, in their obsession, the Light dies in their grasp, and stays dark until they release their need for it.
When the Light is liberated and allowed to be free, it once again lights the path toward liberation and ultimate freedom.
No one can grasp the Light or hold on to it. The Light can only be experienced. And one can only experience the Light when one releases the need for its illumination.
Accept that the Light is above you and within you, existing simultaneously on all planes. The Light is pulling you toward it. The Light is your true being in its fullness. Allow yourself to experience its truth. Your truth.
No need to reach for it. The Light and you are one. Liberation comes when you know that you are the Light.
